One of the most common problems that the homeowners face is a leaky roof. A roof leak can give rise to many new problems like, it can damage the interiors of the home, walls. It can also give rise to molds and mildew. So, it becomes essential to locate these problem areas and repair them or get them repaired.

Many a times these roof leaks can be easily repaired without spending a lot of money. So, do not panic in such a situation and try to locate the source of the leak . Some common places for leaks are : fields of shingles, valleys or low spots in the roof, skylights, chimneys, plumbing vent flashings, wall step flashings, furnace or B-vent flashings, ice dams, missing shingles.

The very first thing that you will notice if there is a leak will be the wet ceiling tiles. You can find the source of the leak by tracing the leak backwards to its source on the roof. It is quite possible that the source is far away from the point where the water is dripping inside the home.

The dripping water can destroy many things inside the home. So, just make sure that you remove all the things from below the leak location like any electronic equipment such as TV and computers or any furniture in that area.

In some situations you might have to work a bit harder in order to locate the source. If you are not easily able to get to the leak source, remove the top tiling.

If you find a missing or a worn out shingle due to which there was a roof leak, you can easily get it replaced.

For any complex issues, calling a professional roofer is the best solution. This will prevent any further damage as these people can take good care of your roof but make sure that you take fast actions in such cases otherwise they can lead to serious problems.

Regular maintenance of the roof is very essential in order to keep it in a good condition over the years. Get your roof inspected by a professional from time to time and specially after a strong wind storm or snow. Also make sure to regularly clean the gutters and the downspouts.
